Plant protection agent: Discussion over maximum quantities

(openPR) - already one year ago measurements of plant protection agent residues in some fruit and kinds of vegetable attention in the media found and disconcerted the consumer. www.allum.de had taken in addition position.

Now the environment organization Greenpeace submitted its report over changes in the permissible maximum quantities for plant protection agents in food. Result of the report: Into Germany raised from year to year the permissible maximum values were lowered behördlicherseits rather as. Between 2004 and 2006 the factors for a rise of the maximum values rose more strongly than for a sinking. In other words: the consumer and health protection would be loosened.

Now does the quality of ours sink so far as high-quality regarded food Do we have to fear health consequences

The answer reads: No!

Maximum quantities for arrears in food on the one hand and health-referred limit values (ADI and ARfD values, see below) on the other hand may not be equated, since they refer to different circumstances.

Arrears maximum quantities

Arrears maximum quantities orient themselves at the minimization principle: the assigned quantity of plant protection agents is to be so low selected that the desired effect is still obtained and at the same time amount of backlog never more highly than health justifiable is. Primarily an excess of the arrears maximum quantities reflects an injury of the rules for „property agricultural practice “. It is to be equated however not compellingly with an impairment of the health.

Arrears maximum quantities are regulated in the arrears maximum quantity regulation (RHmV) legally.

Health-referred limit values: ADI and ARfD value

For the evaluation of possible health effects ADI = acceptable stand DAILY Intake) and with brief admission „the acutes reference dose “(ARfD) for order with long-term admission „the bear-cash daily photograph quantity “.

ADI: The World Health Organization and the world nourishing organization define the ADI value as that substance quantity, which a consumer can take up daily lifelong, without having to fear a risk for the health. For each certified plant protection agent a ADI value is specified.

ARfD: For the evaluation of certain materials with high acute toxicity the acutes reference dose is better suitable than the ADI value. It is defined as the substance quantity, which a consumer with a meal and/or with the food can take up within a daily without health risk (BfR 2006). ARfD values are specified only for such plant protection agents, with which also a unique (sufficiently high) admission can have negative consequences for the health.

The valid in each case ADI and ARfD values are adapted constantly to the scientific knowledge level. A current list is in the report of the BfR from 04 January 2006.

If in food arrears above the maximum quantity were determined, it is examined whether also one of the two health-referred limit values is exceeded.

A slight brief excess of the ADI value computed on lifelong admission is less critical than those of the ARfD value.

Result:

The fixed arrears maximum quantities for plant protection agents in food and the respective health-referred limit values differ completely substantially in their force of expression. The actualization of permissible arrears maximum quantities does not entail inevitably a degradation of the high quality of our food. The consumer should not let itself be disconcerted. In the long run it must be however, as already in former times stressed, ready, to pay to the agricultural producers for qualitatively high-quality food also an appropriate price.
